Sapri

Sapri Cilento and Cilento Coast Campania

Located in the South of the Campania region, on a small plain overlooking the bay of Sapri, during the Roman period the town was one of the favourite destinations of the Roman patricians; Cicero called it "a small gem of the southern sea".
Sapri is also known for Carlo Pisacane's expeditions (July 2nd 1857), described in the famous poem "La Spigolatrice di Sapri". Even if Pisacane's expedition failed, however paved the way for Garibaldi's "Spedizione dei Mille". The tragic expedition is commemorated by an obelisk erected at "Largo Trecento", by a statue and a bronze representation of the "Spigolatrice" (the gleaner) laying on a rock overlooking the bay where Pisacane's expedition of the Three hundred unloaded.
Today Sapri is a touristic location, recently awarded by the Blue Flag.
